The Guns of Navarone<\/strong><\/em> is a 1961 action<\/a> adventure<\/a> war film<\/a> directed by J. Lee Thompson<\/a> from a screenplay by Carl Foreman<\/a>, based on Alistair MacLean<\/a>‘s 1957 novel<\/a>. Foreman also produced the film. The film stars Gregory Peck<\/a>, David Niven<\/a> and Anthony Quinn<\/a>, along with Stanley Baker<\/a>, Anthony Quayle<\/a>, Irene Papas<\/a>, Gia Scala<\/a>, Richard Harris<\/a> and James Darren<\/a>. The book and the film share a plot: the efforts of an Allied<\/a> commando<\/a> unit to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress<\/a> that threatens Allied naval ships in the Aegean Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1943, the Axis powers<\/a> plan an assault on the island of Kheros, where 2,000 British soldiers are marooned<\/a>, to display their military strength and convince neutral Turkey to join them. Rescue by the Royal Navy<\/a> is prevented by two enormous radar<\/a>-directed large-calibre guns<\/a> on (fictional) Navarone Island<\/a>. When aerial bombing efforts fail, Allied Intelligence gathers a commando<\/a> unit to infiltrate Navarone and destroy the guns. Led by Major Roy Franklin, the team is composed of Captain Keith Mallory, a spy and an officer with the Long Range Desert Group<\/a>; Colonel Andrea Stavros from the Greek Army<\/a>; Franklin’s friend Corporal Miller, an explosives expert and chemistry professor; Greco-American<\/a> Spyros Pappadimos, a native of Navarone; and “The Butcher of Barcelona” Brown, an engineer and knife fighter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
