The supporting cast features <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burl_Ives\">Burl Ives<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuck_Connors\">Chuck Connors<\/a>. Filmed in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technicolor\">Technicolor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technirama\">Technirama<\/a>, the picture was based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Big_Country_(Hamilton_novel)\">serialized magazine novel <em>Ambush at Blanco Canyon<\/em><\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Hamilton\">Donald Hamilton<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Big_Country#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> and was co-produced by Wyler and Peck. The opening title sequence was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saul_Bass\">Saul Bass<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burl Ives won the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Award\">Academy Award<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Award_for_Best_Supporting_Actor\">Best Supporting Actor<\/a> for his performance, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Globe_Award\">Golden Globe Award<\/a>. The film was also nominated for an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Award_for_Best_Original_Score\">Academy Award for the musical score<\/a>, composed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerome_Moross\">Jerome Moross<\/a>. The film is one of the few in which Heston plays a major supporting role rather than the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Plot\">Plot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Former sea captain James McKay travels to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Old_West\">American West<\/a> to join his fianc\u00e9e Patricia at the enormous ranch owned by her father, Henry &#8220;The Major&#8221; Terrill. After a meeting with Patricia&#8217;s friend, schoolteacher Julie Maragon, McKay, and Patricia are accosted by a group of drunks led by Buck Hannassey, the son of the Major&#8217;s ardent and implacable enemy Rufus Hannassey \u2212 with whom he&#8217;s had a longstanding feud over water access for cattle.
