It has a predominantly continental climate<\/a>, and an area of 238,397 km2<\/sup> (92,046 sq mi), with a population of 19 million people (2023). Romania is the twelfth-largest country<\/a> in Europe and the sixth-most populous<\/a> member state of the European Union<\/a>. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest<\/a>, followed by Ia\u0219i<\/a>, Cluj-Napoca<\/a>, Timi\u0219oara<\/a>, Constan\u021ba<\/a>, Craiova<\/a>, Bra\u0219ov<\/a>, and Gala\u021bi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe’s second-longest river, the Danube<\/a>, rises in Germany’s Black Forest<\/a> and flows southeast for 2,857 km (1,775 mi), before emptying into Romania’s Danube Delta<\/a>. The Carpathian Mountains<\/a> cross Romania from the north to the southwest and include Moldoveanu Peak<\/a>, at an altitude of 2,544 m (8,346 ft).[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settlement in what is now Romania began in the Lower Paleolithic<\/a> followed by written records attesting the kingdom of Dacia<\/a>, its conquest<\/a>, and subsequent Romanisation<\/a> by the Roman Empire<\/a> during late antiquity<\/a>. The modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through a personal union<\/a> of the Danubian Principalities<\/a> of Moldavia<\/a> and Wallachia<\/a>. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire<\/a> in 1877. During World War I<\/a>, after declaring its neutrality<\/a> in 1914, Romania fought<\/a> together with the Allied Powers<\/a> from 1916. In the aftermath of the war, Bukovina<\/a>, Bessarabia<\/a>, Transylvania<\/a>, and parts of Banat<\/a>, Cri\u0219ana<\/a>, and Maramure\u0219<\/a> became part of the Kingdom of Romania<\/a>.[17]<\/a><\/sup> In June\u2013August 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov\u2013Ribbentrop Pact<\/a> and Second Vienna Award<\/a>, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union<\/a> and Northern Transylvania<\/a> to Hungary. In November 1940, Romania signed the Tripartite Pact<\/a> and, consequently, in June 1941 entered World War II<\/a> on the Axis side<\/a>, fighting against the Soviet Union<\/a> until August 1944, when it joined<\/a> the Allies<\/a> and recovered Northern Transylvania. Following the war and occupation by the Red Army<\/a>, Romania became a socialist republic<\/a> and a member of the Warsaw Pact<\/a>. After the 1989 Revolution<\/a>, Romania began a transition<\/a> towards democracy<\/a> and a market economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romania is a developed country,[18]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>[20]<\/a><\/sup> and an emerging middle power in international affairs.[21]<\/a><\/sup>[22]<\/a><\/sup> Its economy ranks among the fastest growing in the European Union, being the world’s 44th largest by nominal GDP<\/a>, and the 36th largest by PPP. Romania experienced rapid economic growth in the early 2000s; its economy is now based predominantly on services. It is a producer and net exporter of cars and electric energy through companies like Automobile Dacia<\/a> and OMV Petrom<\/a>. The majority of Romania’s population are ethnic Romanians<\/a> and religiously identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians<\/a>, speaking Romanian<\/a>, a Romance language<\/a> (more specifically Eastern Romance<\/a>\/Balkan Romance<\/a>).
