Romania is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_European_countries_by_area\">twelfth-largest country<\/a>&nbsp;in Europe and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_European_Union_member_states_by_population\">sixth-most populous<\/a>&nbsp;member state of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a>. Its capital and largest city is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bucharest\">Bucharest<\/a>, followed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ia%C8%99i\">Ia\u0219i<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cluj-Napoca\">Cluj-Napoca<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timi%C8%99oara\">Timi\u0219oara<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constan%C8%9Ba\">Constan\u021ba<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Craiova\">Craiova<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bra%C8%99ov\">Bra\u0219ov<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gala%C8%9Bi\">Gala\u021bi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe&#8217;s second-longest river, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danube\">Danube<\/a>, rises in Germany&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Forest\">Black Forest<\/a>&nbsp;and flows southeast for 2,857&nbsp;km (1,775&nbsp;mi), before emptying into Romania&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danube_Delta\">Danube Delta<\/a>. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carpathian_Mountains\">Carpathian Mountains<\/a>&nbsp;cross Romania from the north to the southwest and include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moldoveanu_Peak\">Moldoveanu Peak<\/a>, at an altitude of 2,544&nbsp;m (8,346&nbsp;ft).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Settlement in what is now Romania began in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lower_Paleolithic\">Lower Paleolithic<\/a>&nbsp;followed by written records attesting the kingdom of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dacia\">Dacia<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trajan%27s_Dacian_Wars\">its conquest<\/a>, and subsequent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanization_(cultural)\">Romanisation<\/a>&nbsp;by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Empire\">Roman Empire<\/a>&nbsp;during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Late_antiquity\">late antiquity<\/a>. The modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personal_union\">personal union<\/a>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Principalities_of_Moldavia_and_Wallachia\">Danubian Principalities<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moldavia\">Moldavia<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallachia\">Wallachia<\/a>. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottoman_Empire\">Ottoman Empire<\/a>&nbsp;in 1877. During&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War I<\/a>, after declaring its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutral_country\">neutrality<\/a>&nbsp;in 1914, Romania&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania_in_World_War_I\">fought<\/a>&nbsp;together with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_I\">Allied Powers<\/a>&nbsp;from 1916. In the aftermath of the war,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bukovina\">Bukovina<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bessarabia\">Bessarabia<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transylvania\">Transylvania<\/a>, and parts of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banat\">Banat<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cri%C8%99ana\">Cri\u0219ana<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maramure%C8%99\">Maramure\u0219<\/a>&nbsp;became part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Romania\">Kingdom of Romania<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In June\u2013August&nbsp;1940, as a consequence of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molotov%E2%80%93Ribbentrop_Pact\">Molotov\u2013Ribbentrop Pact<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Vienna_Award\">Second Vienna Award<\/a>, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\">Soviet Union<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Transylvania\">Northern Transylvania<\/a>&nbsp;to Hungary. In November&nbsp;1940, Romania signed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tripartite_Pact\">Tripartite Pact<\/a>&nbsp;and, consequently, in June&nbsp;1941 entered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axis_powers\">Axis side<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania_in_World_War_II\">fighting against the Soviet Union<\/a>&nbsp;until August&nbsp;1944, when it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1944_Romanian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat\">joined<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_II\">Allies<\/a>&nbsp;and recovered Northern Transylvania. Following the war and occupation by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Army\">Red Army<\/a>, Romania became a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socialist_Republic_of_Romania\">socialist republic<\/a>&nbsp;and a member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warsaw_Pact\">Warsaw Pact<\/a>. After the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanian_Revolution\">1989&nbsp;Revolution<\/a>, Romania&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Romania_(1989%E2%80%93present)\">began a transition<\/a>&nbsp;towards&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democracy\">democracy<\/a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Market_economy\">market economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romania is a developed country,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and an emerging middle power in international affairs.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romania#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Its economy ranks among the fastest growing in the European Union, being the world&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)\">44th largest by nominal GDP<\/a>, and the 36th largest by PPP. Romania experienced rapid economic growth in the early 2000s; its economy is now based predominantly on services. It is a producer and net exporter of cars and electric energy through companies like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Automobile_Dacia\">Automobile Dacia<\/a>&nbsp;and OMV&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petrom\">Petrom<\/a>.
